China Proposes National Food Safety Standard (GB) Legislation Plan for 2024 On March 26, 2024, China National Health Commission (NHC) issued the draft of national food safety standard legislation plan for 2024 (hereafter as the Plan). 34 food standards are listed in the Plan, covering food products, food additives, food nutritional fortifiers, testing and determination method, as well as food business operation. Among them, 14 are new standards to be formulated, while the rest 20 standards are existing ones with revisions.

China Customs Releases the List of Rejected Imported Food in January and February 2024 On March 27, 2023, General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) published two lists of non-compliant food products in January and February​ 2024. The lists revealed that a total of 279 batches and 251 batches of imported food were rejected in January and February respectively, involving 43 countries/regions.

China SAMR Announces New Labeling Guidelines for Prepackaged Foods On March 26, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) of China announced several detailed guidelines, encouraging food businesses to improve the labeling of production dates and shelf lives on prepackaged food products, including food additives. The announcement is expected to facilitate greater transparency for consumers in identifying the packaging and labeling information.

Singapore Proposes Regulations in Defined Food and Pre-market Approval On March 15, 2024, Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued a consultation document, seeking feedback on regulations for defined food and their pre-market approval. The draft regulations aim to clarify the responsibilities of companies selling novel and genetically modified (GM) foods in Singapore, requiring them to obtain pre-approval before market launch. Any comment can be submitted before May 14, 2024 via SFA.

Japan Bans a Designated Food Additive in Food Products On March 15, 2024, Japan Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) issued an amendment to revise the food additive list. As per the amendment, 3,6-dimethyl-5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-2(4H )-benzofuranone will be removed from the Essence List of 18 Kinds as of December 31, 2024.
