China Passes E-commerce Law: Implications for CBEC

On August 31st China passed its first ecommerce law. The new legislation strengthens IP protection for brands and increases the responsibilities of online platforms particularly with respect to their accountability for the authenticity, safety and quality of goods sold on their platforms. The new law has not clarified the exact requirements for cross-border ecommerce which are expected to be detailed in a pending administrative rule specifically developed to regulate CBEC.

China E-commerce’s Turnover Hits 253.97 Billion RMB on Singles’ Day

Single’s day (analogous to America’s Black Friday) is often used as a surrogate marker to assess growth in China’s ecommerce sector. This year Single’s day broke all records with turnover of 253.97 billion rmb, bolstered by growth in rural areas and strong performance in areas like infant formula and milk.

On September 28, 2016, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) published the draft of Measures of E-commerce Product Quality Spot Check Management (hereinafter called the measure) aiming to intensify supervision of products sold on the internet.
