Japan Proposes to Remove One Food Additive From the Positive List

Japan will prohibit the use of 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylfuran as food additive starting from Dec. 31, 2022.

According to the announcement issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) on Apr. 22, 2022, although food additive 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylfuran has little carcinogenic effect on human beings, it proves to be genotoxic carcinogen. Therefore, MHLW announced this additive would be deleted from the list of designated food additives from Dec. 31, 2022.

From Jan. 1, 2023, enterprises shall stop manufacturing, importing, processing, or using food additive 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylfuran as well as preparations and foods containing 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylfuran. However, the provision doesn’t apply to products manufactured or imported before Dec. 31, 2022.
