U.S. FDA Finalizes the Guidance on New Dietary Ingredient Notification Procedures and Timeframes

FDA issued an industry guidance to help manufacturers and distributors of new dietary ingredients (NDIs) and dietary supplements prepare and submit new dietary ingredient notifications (NDINs) to the FDA. The Guidance provides information in a questions-and-answers format about the NDIN submission and review process.

Australia Updates Permissible Ingredients in Listed Medicines, Involving Vitamin and Herbal Supplements

On March 1, 2024, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia published a notice to announce the issuance of Therapeutic Goods (Permissible Ingredients) Determination (No. 1) 2024, replacing the previous instrument. Major changes involve the addition of 3 new ingredients and the revision of requirements for 37 ingredients. The new determination took effect on March 1, 2024.

Philippines to Enhance the Management and Conduct of Product Recalls for Prepackaged Processed Food

On February 29, 2024, the Philippines Food and Drug Administration (PFDA) published a draft of supplemental Guidelines aimed at enhancing the management and conduct of product recalls for prepackaged processed food products. In accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety Act of 2013, the Guidelines is designed to ensure the safety and compliance of food products in the market. All comments in MSWord format can be sent via email to ojolaurenana@fda.gov.ph no later than March 15.

GACC Revokes Registration Qualification of an Overseas Enterprise Behind a Popular Beverage

On February 26, 2024, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) issued a notice announcing the cancellation of registration for JERRY&SONS PHARMACEUTICAL INC, a U.S. beverage manufacturer. As revealed by the notice, the company was found to have provided false materials during the registration process. GACC also stated that there have been no customs declaration records for products from this company. In light of this, consumers are strongly advised against purchasing any beverages from this company, including TiQ Prune Juice, a popular beverage in the Chinese market. Those who have already purchased these products are urged to stop consuming them and contact the original supplier for return procedures.

Philippines Senate Proposes Bill to Ban Added Sugar for Baby Foods

In January of 2024, the Philippines Senate introduced and revealed Senate Bill No. 2518 titled An Act Prohibiting Producers and Manufacturers of Baby Food From Adding Sugar on Their Products, and for Other Purposes, also known as No Added-Sugar on Baby Foods Act. Currently, this new bill has been undergone the first reading and is now pending in the committee.
