This Act replaces the Food Act 1981 to restate and reform the law relating to how persons trade in food in New Zealand. Its primary purposes are to ensure the safety and suitability of food for sale, maintain public confidence in the food safety regime, and provide for a risk-based management system. The Act establishes a framework where food businesses must operate under a risk-based measure appropriate to the food safety risks of their activities. This includes Food Control Plans for higher-risk businesses and National Programmes for medium-to-low-risk businesses. The Act also covers requirements for imported food, the roles of regulatory authorities, and enforcement provisions.
