This regulation specifies the procedures for placing nutrition information on the label of food products. It applies to all prepackaged food products, with the exception of foods where the amount of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, salt or sodium, and total sugars is negligible (can be expressed as zero), such as spices and seasonings, fresh vegetables and fruits, including any mixture of fresh vegetables or fruits, whole or cut, without any additives (such as salad without croutons), and does not include dried vegetables and fruits, fresh and chilled meat, poultry, and fish that are uncooked and without added spices or water, foods sold directly to the consumer from the site of preparation, such as salads, baked goods, sweets, and ready-to-eat meals, food products consisting of a single food ingredient such as rice, tea, coffee, or sugar, packaged drinking water and mineral water, provided that the mineral content is declared, packaged foods in small containers (where the area of the largest surface of the package is less than 25 cm2), food additives, foodstuffs that require packaging or further processing and are not sold directly to the consumer, outer packaging for self-service foods that have nutrition labeling on an accompanying panel or on the original packaging, and foods for special nutritional uses, including but not limited to, meal replacements for weight control, dietary supplements, foods for infants and young children, infant formula, follow-on formula, and milk for special medical purposes.
