This standard applies to food, food additives, packaging, etc., specifies product design, manufacturing conditions, and inspection results. Any food products, food additives or packaging that fail to conform to these established quality criteria are deemed substandard and are prohibited from being distributed or sold in the Japanese market.

On September 18, 2024, Japan MHLW issued an amendment to Specification and Standards for Food, Food additives, Etc., which mainly revised maximum residue limits (MRLs) for 12 pesticides and veterinary drugs.
