Australia and New Zealand to Amend Food Standards Code, Involving Added Sugar Claims and Novel Food

On August 19, 2024, FSANZ announced the approval of several important updates to the Food Standards Code, involving added sugar claims, novel food and processing aid.

On August 19, 2024, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued Notification Circular-301-24 to announce the approval of several important updates to the Food Standards Code. These updates include the revision to added sugar claims and approval of a novel food and a processing aid. Food ministers were notified of the approval. If no review is requested within 60 days, the Food Standards Code will be amended accordingly.

Added sugar claims

FSANZ approves amendments to the Food Standards Code to correct a typographical error and remove a redundant term from the conditions for no added sugar(s) claims. Example revision is shown in the table below:

Novel food

FSANZ permits the sale of D-allulose as a novel food in Australia and New Zealand. Permitted food classes and levels are listed as below:

Processing aid

FSANZ permits the use of a protein engineered triacylglycerol lipase (EC 3.1.1.3) from a genetically modified strain of Trichoderma reesei containing a gene from Thermomyces lanuginosus as a processing aid in the manufacture of bakery products and other cereal-based products.
