On July 19, 2024, Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the Regulation on Procedures of Food Serial Number B.E. 2024 (hereinafter the Regulation). It became effective since the date of promulgation, replacing the version issued in 2019 and its following four amendments in 2019, 2020, 2021 and earlier 2024.
Food serial number contains information of food manufacturer/importer, food registration, and production batches. The following food products must obtain food serial number before being sold in Thailand:
Group 1: Specifically controlled food
Group 2: Food with quality or standard requirements
Group 3: Food that must have labels
Group 4: Food other than food groups 1 through 3 that has passed inspection of manufacturing facility standards or import facility standards
The Regulation stipulates the application procedures of food serial number for different types of foods. Take food with quality or standard requirements for example (e.g. dietary supplement, milk products), enterprise needs to submit the application form and relevant materials such as ingredient formula and food raw materials standards to Thai FDA via online system. After going through document review, the competent authority will issue a food serial number and a food registration certificate to the applicant.
In addition, the Regulation also specifies the cases subject to approval cancellation. For instance, if a food product is found to contain harmful substances to human body, then the competent authority is eligible to revoke the food serial number previously issued.
