I. What is AKK
Akkermansia muciniphila1 (A. muciniphila, or AKK) is a mucin-degrading bacterium found in the human intestine. It is a strict anaerobe that uses mucin as its sole source of carbon and nitrogen. It is an oval-shaped, non-motile, Gram-negative bacterium. This species accounts for around 1% to 5% of a healthy intestinal microbiota.2
