Phase-out of Synthetic Food Dyes in the United States: Regulatory Shift and Industry Implications

The U.S. federal initiative to phase out petroleum-based synthetic food dyes, together with expanding state-level restrictions, is driving an industry-wide transition toward natural color alternatives in order to maintain market access and ensure supply chain continuity.

Background

Synthetic food dyes are widely used in the U.S. food supply, particularly in confectionery, snacks, and beverages marketed to children. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that approximately 19% of nearly 40,000 popular packaged food and beverage products in the U.S. contain synthetic dyes. Notably, products containing such dyes were associated with, on average, 141% higher sugar content than those without.
