Australia and New Zealand Approve the Use of 2′-FL Combined with GOS and/or ITF in Infant Formula Products

Stakeholder should follow the current maximum level of 2’-FL, GOS, and ITF when added in combination to infant formula products. There is an exclusive usage period of 15 months for the two applicants.

On December 19, 2022, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the approval of Application A1251, which permitted the combination of 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) with galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and/or inulin-type fructans (ITF) as ingredients in infant formula products.

According to the current Standard, 2′-FL, GOS and ITF can be added separately to infant formula products, but the addition of 2’-FL in combination with GOS and/or ITF is not allowed. After the latest amendment, the authority will remove this prohibition from the Food Standards Code.

In terms of the usage level, the Application did not seek changes to the existing maximum permitted amounts of 2′-FL, GOS and ITF. Therefore, stakeholders should still follow the current permitted maximum amounts of these substances (2′-FL: 2.4 g/L; GOS: 8 g/L; ITF: 3g/L) when added in combination to infant formula products.

This application was submitted by Nutricia Australia Pty Ltd and Chr. Hansen A/S. They will be granted with an exclusive use period of 15 months for the combination of 2′-FL with GOS and/or ITF after gazettal of the approved draft variation.
