Australia Recall Frozen Berries of Chinese Origin

Australia’s food company, Patties Foods Ltd, has recalled two products from domestic supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths and IGA due to potential Hepatitis A viral contamination. The two products are mixed frozen berries and raspberries, which are made from materials imported from China.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the precautionary measure earlier via a release on its official site outlining that certain batches of Nanna’s Raspberries and Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries are being recalled nationwide.

The most common food sources contaminated with hepatitis A are:

  • Food being grown in contaminated water

  • Produce being picked or packed by a person or people who are infected with hepatitis A

  • Produce being washed in contaminated water

It is believed that exposure to such contaminated products may cause Hep A infection in humans. The Australian government is currently undertaking further investigations into this case and more information will be released to the public at a later stage.

In response, some local authorities in China have warned relevant manufacturers that stricter inspection of exported fruits will be carried out in future.
