FSANZ has approved regulatory variations under Proposal P1056 that broadly prohibit retail sale of pure caffeine and guarana extract
Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods may contain up to 200 mg total caffeine per recommended daily amount, but must comply with strict concentration caps. Packaged high-caffeine coffee beverages (≥200 mg/serve) will face new mandatory advisory and labelling requirements.
On March 24, 2026, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the approval of draft regulatory variations under Proposal P1056, initiating a significant revision of caffeine regulations within the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code). The approved measures introduce strict prohibitions on the retail sale of pure caffeine as well as establish stringent formulation and labelling requirements for Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods (FSSF) and highly caffeinated beverages. The variation took effect on the date of gazette. Enterprises are given a 2-year transitional period.
