Korea Approves Deep Sea Water Mineral Extract as New Food Ingredient

Deep sea water mineral extract can be used in bread, beverage and wine products in Korea.

On Feb. 19, 2019, Korea food and drug safety department announced the approval of deep sea water mineral extract as a new food ingredient after an extensive toxicological evaluation and document review that lasted nearly 2 years.

Deep sea water mineral extract is a kind of powder ingredient condensed and separated from deep sea water (mineral content is at least 250 times than that of normal drinking water). This new food raw material will be applied in bread, beverage and wine in Korea.

Deep sea water mineral extract has been widely used in health food, pharmaceuticals, and aquatic products in America, Japan, and Taiwan.

The approval will likely see development of a water treatment industry in Korea and we can expect to see greater production of products using desalted water, condensed water, mineral desalted/condensed water, salt water and mineral extractions.
