New Zealand and China to Cooperate on A Traceability System for Infant Formula Products

China CCIC (China Certification & Inspection Group) has been working with New Zealand government and the industry to implement a traceability system for infant formula products exported to the Chinese market. The front end of the system will require New Zealand infant formula inspected by CCIC at the manufacturing site before being issued with a unique traceability code for use downstream in the supply chain by both consumers and authorities. China CIQ will still carry out inspection on these goods when they arrive at port but the processes will be much faster as the products already have been checked by CCIC in NZ. The system will further facilitate trade between the two nations and afford Chinese consumers full supply train transparency and the chance to finally buy governmentally approved guaranteed genuine products and get full traceability information by simply scanning the barcode.

Mr Yuan Jiancheng from CCIC reported that CCIC will go to each factory and conduct sample testing of infant formula. Qualified products will have a special barcode attached to the label which incorporates anti-counterfeiting measures. Information contained within the barcode will be stored in the CCIC public service platform and activated by CCIC after the goods arrive at port and undergo a sequence of checkpoints including CIQ inspection, issuance of dairy health certificate and final release by customs.

Nuztri, a premium NZ infant formula brand developed by Best Health Products Limite, has been picked as the first brand to implement the new program. According to a company spokesman “we’re very excited about being the first brand to be chosen. For us, it gives us certainty that once our products move from NZ, it will seamlessly go across Chinese border and the process will be faster. From the Chinese customer’s perspective, it’s now possible to read the tag and get all the information about when the product was made, who made the product and is it a genuine product. ”The traceability program is expected to be expanded to more NZ made products including other dairy products, meat, wine, seafood, etc.
