On February 19, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced its "2024 Major Policy Implementation Plan"1.
This year's work plan reflects the core values of the national participatory vision "A world where food and drug safety is a daily routine", prepared by MFDS in August last year. Specifically, the plan consists of three core strategies - "Enhancing safety via science," "Enhancing safety via on-site inspection," and "Enhancing safety via partnership".
The key contents of the work plan are as below:
Firstly, the application scope of the electronic screening for imported food (SAFE-24) will be expanded to all imported food items. At the same time, the manual document inspection will be replaced with automatic digital screening, which is expected to significantly reduce the customs clearance cost and the average time from one day to five minutes. The authorly also intends to adopt QR label to provide food information more prominently and easily.
Additionally, the Narcotics Information Management System (NIMS) will be linked with relevant departments to effectively block the illegal distribution and misuse of narcotics.
Furthermore, concrete implementation procedures for the "Food and Drug Regulatory Science and Innovation Act" will be established, then fully enforced for regulatory innovation later in this year. Regulatory Innovation 3.0, aiming to identify and improve challenges demanded in the field of people's lives, will also be promoted by MFDS in 2024.
In addition, through active regulatory diplomacy such as the Asia-Pacific Forum of Regulatory Authorities for Food Safety (APFRAS) and the International Regulatory Symposium on Artificial Intelligence Medical Products (AIRIS), the Korean competent authority plans to provide support on compliance to ensure that regulations support the competitiveness of the Korean food industry.
