South Korea Updates Food Code, Focusing on MRLs Requirements

On April 11, 2023, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) disclosed the latest version of Food Code1, mainly optimizing the requirements of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides, veterinary drugs, and other contaminants.

(1) Optimization of Pesticides MRL Lists

The new regulation streamlines the MRLs for pesticides. Firstly, the MRLs for residual substances in livestock and fishery products specified in Attached Table 6 are integrated into the MRLs for pesticides under Attached Table 4. These pesticide items are also rearranged alphabetically, making it easier for stakeholders to find the information they need., Additionally, the MRLs for pesticides registered under Pesticide Control Act2 and imported pesticides are updated.

(2) Modifications for Veterinary Drugs

The items for veterinary drug limits in the Attached Table 5 of the Food Code are also relisted in alphabetical order. Moreover, the residual limits for Menichlopholan and Piperonyl butoxide are modified.

(3) Amendments to Test Methods

To improve the accuracy of test results, MFDS has revised the test methods. The amendments include newly inserting test methods for pesticides and veterinary drugs due to revisions in residue limits, and removing the duplicate methods.

The new version of Food Code came into effect along with its issuance on April 11, 2023. Nevertheless, the amendments related to the Attached Table 5 will be effective on July 1, 2023.
