Thailand Proposes to Revise the Labeling Requirements for Prepackaged Food

The draft involves the revision to the labeling of ingredient list, expiration date and allergen substances.

On August 8, 2023, Thailand Food and Drug Administration opened the revisions to food labeling requirements for public feedback. Any comments can be sent back to [email protected] before September 30, 2023.

The proposed revisions involve the following aspects:

1. The labeling of ingredients list

According to the existing MOPH Notification No. 401 (B.E. 2562(2019)) Re: Labeling of Prepackaged Foods No. 3, the main ingredients should be indicated in descending order by weight. However, the draft proposed to repeal this requirement.

2. The indication of expiration date

As revealed by the draft, it is allowed to indicate the expiration date or “consumed before date” by using their corresponding English abbreviations.

3. Allergen labeling

Enterprises can use the text "Information of food allergies" or words with similar meaning as the guide word of allergen information. Besides, the draft states that the allergen information should be displayed in a conspicuous position on the label.
