CAC Approves Key Updates on Food Additives and Labeling

Codex updated the General Standard for Food Additives with targeted revisions covering soybean-based beverages, steviol glycosides in processed meat products, and nisin nomenclature. Codex also adopted new guidance on precautionary allergen labeling and emergency food labeling, adding science-based rules to the pre-packaged food labeling standard.

On July 10, 2026, the 49th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, adopting several new and revised texts. The adopted texts include revisions to the General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA, CXS 192-1995) and introduced new guidelines for precautionary allergen labeling. These science-based standards and guidelines are now added to the Codex Alimentarius.
