Canada Updates Labelling Rules for Milk Ingredients on Food Products

CFIA has amended the “Common Names for Ingredients and Components” to change how milk and dairy-derived ingredients must be declared on Canadian food labels. Food manufacturers have a transition period until January 1, 2030, during which they may follow either the old or new labelling requirements before full compliance becomes mandatory.

On February 11, 2026, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced amendments to the Common Names for Ingredients and Components document, officially changing the labelling requirements for milk and dairy-derived ingredients on food products. The updates, which follow a public consultation, revise the scope of ingredients that can be grouped under collective terms and introduce new terminology. Food manufacturers have a transition period until January 1, 2030, to bring their product labels into compliance with the new rules.
