On 28 Nov 2014, CFDA approved the second batch of 10 domestic infant formula manufacturers via Announcement No.56-2014. The first batch containing 82 baby formula producers in China was released early in May this year (see CL Food News on 1 Jun 2014). Meanwhile, the product portfolio of each manufacturer is also released. The 92 factories are allowed to make infant formula in China under the new production licensing regulation “Detailed Rules for Examination on Production Licensing for Baby Formula Manufacturers (2013)” (see CL Food News on 27 Dec 2013).

Last year the Chinese government began its reform of China’s infant formula market on both an international front and domestically. Firstly the government required that all manufacturers need to fully comply with stricter CFDA licensing rules. Secondly China’s government required that all overseas manufacturers that supply infant formula to China also need China CNCA’s approval. Up to now, 59 foreign manufacturers are approved by China’s CNCA (see CL Analysis for more information)
