China Launches Unified Food Tracking Platform

On 14 Jun 2014, a safety tracking platform for the food industry was launched under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The pilot program will initially see six infant formula manufacturers, two liquor companies and one meat manufacturer use the platform.

While there have already been some in-house quality tracking systems maintained by companies, it is only after the establishment of this platform that an integrated channel will be available to  the public enabling the tracking of products throughout the entire supply chain. Scanning the product QR code or inputting the product number to the query field on the website will track the product information which includes the manufacturer, distributor and supervision and consumption information.
The six infant formula producers are Yili, Mengniu-Yashili, Wandashan, Sanyuan, Mingyisi and Huishan. According to reliable sources, by the end of 2014 the platform will be expanded to all the domestic infant formula producers. Consumers can track information such as the whereabouts of the milk source and the manufacturing plants.
Mobile phone apps for the platform are currently under development which will in the near future allow real-time access. The site can be found at (http://www.foodcredit.org.cn/zs/zhuisu.html). It is hoped the project will create interaction between consumers, authorities and the industry and enhance China’s food safety.
