During the 13th Annual Food Safety Summit, Mr. Teng Jiacai from CFDA stated that CFDA in collaboration with other ministries and departments are busy formulating the Implementation Rules for China’s new Food Safety Law which has already come into force since Oct 1st. The aim is to establish a comprehensive national food safety regulatory scheme matched with the new requirements of the FSL.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jin Xiaotao from NHFPC reported at the summit that NHFPC is still in the process consolidating the National Food Safety Standard (NFSS) system based on the existing patchwork of 5,000 food standards issued by several departments. So far, 636 NFSSs have been issued by NHFPC. There will be more of these standards consolidated and released in the following years. It’s worth noting that after China’s new FSL is implemented, only foods with corresponding NFSSs will be allowed to be imported (see CL Food News on 22 Sep 2015). For foods without corresponding NFSS, overseas exporters, manufacturers or their importers in China can submit standards of the country of origin or international standards to NHFPC for evaluation. NHFPC will temporarily adopt these standards while in the process of formulating its own NFSS.
