China Organic Food: Tianjin CIQ to Increase Supervision of Imported Organic Foods

To ensure the quality and safety of organic foods in China, Tianjin CIQ has implemented several new measures to strengthen the certification management of imported organic foods.

  • Intensive staff training: CIQ staffs responsible for organic food inspections will be asked to join trainings for in-depth understandings of Administrative Measures for Organic Product Certification.

  • Stricter check on certificates: Tianjin CIQ will carry out more thorough checks of certificates of imported foods claimed as organic.

  • Stricter on-site check: Once the Chinese organic certificate attached matches the batch of products, CIQ staffs shall carefully verify the logo and the specific name of the certification body indicated on the minimum package.

  • Strengthened subsequent inspection: Imported foods which are claimed as organic that failed to pass related requirements shall be issued rectification during on-site inspections. For qualified products, notes on organic inspection shall be clearly indicated on the inspection records. Supervision on sales records of importers shall be enhanced to support whole-process management.

  • Promotion of related knowledge: CIQ staffs shall promote organic-certification-related knowledge to the public in order to promote awareness amongst industry and consumers.
