A national import and export bee product inspection and quarantine work conference was held on August 8, 2016. During the conference, new draft “Measures on Inspection and Quarantine of Import and Export Bee Products” were discussed . Stringent requirements relating to bee disease and honey adulteration inspection, and imported bee product audit and assessment were clarified and a legislative, regulatory and administrative roadmap was agreed upon.
China is not only a large importer of bee products but also ranks as the largest exporter in the world. AQSIQ’s import “Blacklist”, lists incompliant products and manufacturers. Noncompliant imported bee products like honey listed in the blacklist have increased by more than 90% in the first half of 2016 compared to the second half of 2015 accounting for 4% of the total import volume. Exported bee products are usually low quality and are frequently adulterated with syrups and other additives. The new inspection and quarantine measures will be a tool the government will use to stimulate bee product manufacturers to improve their product quality and competitiveness.
