China Repeals and Replaces Numerous National Food Safety Standards

8 national hygienic standards were repealed and 79 new food related standards entered into force in June and July.

June and July witnessed great changes to Chinese national food safety standards. On June 23, 8 national hygienic standards were abolished and have been replaced by new national standards.

8 abolished hygienic standards:

  • GB 2726-2005 Hygienic standard for cooked meat products

  • GB 2715-2005 Hygienic standard for grain

  • GB 2707-2005 Hygienic standard for fresh (frozen) livestock

  • GB 19643-2005 Hygienic standard for algae products (containing NO.1 modification list)

  • GB 19640-2005 Hygienic standard for cereal

  • GB 17399-2003 Hygienic standard for chewing gum

  • GB 14932.1-2003 Hygienic standard for edible soybean meal

  • GB 14884-2003 Hygienic standard for preserved fruit

Naming convention and standard terminology

  • “National food safety standard xx”

  • GB year has been updated as well, e,g GB XXXX 2016;

Besides substitution, 79 new food related standards have entered into force since July 1, 2017, including 15 recommended national standards and 64 industry standards. These standards mainly concern food flavoring, wine inspection, and determination methods of exported food.
