FSANZ Implements Revised GM Food Definitions Following Technology Advances

Food Standards Australia New Zealand officially gazetted updated genetically modified food definitions, replacing outdated process-based criteria with outcome-focused classifications that address modern gene technologies.

On September 2, 2025, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) gazetted updated genetically modified food definitions, with immediate effect. The amendments, approved under Proposal 1055 in June 2025, replace outdated process-based criteria with outcome-focused classifications. The new definition address modern gene technologies and align Australian and New Zealand regulations with international approaches adopted in Canada, Japan, and England.
