FSSAI Imposes Stringent Food Safety Mandates on E-commerce Platforms Across India

FSSAI outlined a series of mandatory measures aimed at strengthening food safety compliance across India’s e-commerce sector.

On July 8, 2025, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) convened a high-level meeting with over 70 representatives from major e-commerce platforms to reinforce strict food safety and hygiene standards across the online food supply chain. During the meeting, the CEO of FSSAI made it clear that non-compliance with food safety regulations will be met with serious consequences, directing all platforms to implement rigorous safety protocols and mandatory training for food handlers.

Key Measures Announced by FSSAI for E-commerce Platforms

To ensure full regulatory compliance and consumer safety, FSSAI issued the following key measures:

  • Mandatory Display of FSSAI License Information
All e-commerce platforms are required to clearly display their FSSAI License or Registration numbers on all consumer-facing documents, including invoices, receipts, and cash memos.

  • Promotion of the Food Safety Connect App
Platforms must include details of the “Food Safety Connect” mobile application on all customer communications to enhance public awareness and facilitate consumer engagement.

  • Public Disclosure of Warehouse and Storage Facility Details
Companies must provide comprehensive details of all warehouses and storage locations linked to their operations on the FoSCoS portal, ensuring transparency and traceability.

  • Regular Upload of Warehouse Photographs
E-commerce entities are instructed to upload updated photographs of their warehouses and storage units to the FoSCoS portal on a regular basis to facilitate visual compliance monitoring.

  • Mandatory Training for Food Handlers
All personnel involved in food handling, including those employed by e-commerce platforms, must undergo FSSAI’s FoSTaC (Food Safety Training and Certification) training in hygiene and food safety. Platforms must submit their training plans and implementation timelines to the Authority.

  • Licensing of Warehouses
Every warehouse used in connection with e-commerce food operations must be duly licensed or registered with FSSAI in accordance with applicable regulations.

  • Strict Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures
All platforms must rigorously follow the Standard Operating Procedures and requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act to ensure end-to-end compliance across the food supply chain.

  • Submission of Operational Data to FSSAI
Platforms are expected to share data related to their warehouse infrastructure, food handlers, and other critical information with FSSAI to improve oversight and coordination.
