FSSAI Reinforces Compliance Requirements for E-Commerce Food Businesses

E-commerce FBOs are required to ensure that food products have a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer.

On November 12, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) held a meeting with e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) to reinforce compliance requirements for online food businesses. The meeting involves requirements to ensure transparency and consumer health protection.

FSSAI emphasized the following requirements:

  • E-commerce FBOs are required to ensure that food products have a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer.

  • The authority issued a strong warning against making unsupported claims on e-commerce platforms.

  • FSSAI made it clear that no FBO can operate on any e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or registration.

  • All product claims made on e-commerce platforms must align with the information provided on the product's physical label, as per FSSAI's Labelling and Display Regulations.

  • FSSAI instructed FBOs to implement training programs for delivery personnel, focusing on food safety, hygiene practices, and proper handling procedures.

  • The authority emphasized the importance of separating food items from non-food items during delivery to prevent contamination.
