On November 12, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) held a meeting with e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) to reinforce compliance requirements for online food businesses. The meeting involves requirements to ensure transparency and consumer health protection.
FSSAI emphasized the following requirements:
E-commerce FBOs are required to ensure that food products have a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer.
The authority issued a strong warning against making unsupported claims on e-commerce platforms.
FSSAI made it clear that no FBO can operate on any e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or registration.
All product claims made on e-commerce platforms must align with the information provided on the product's physical label, as per FSSAI's Labelling and Display Regulations.
FSSAI instructed FBOs to implement training programs for delivery personnel, focusing on food safety, hygiene practices, and proper handling procedures.
The authority emphasized the importance of separating food items from non-food items during delivery to prevent contamination.
