Japan's New Food Labelling Regulation Will Take Effect from 1 April 2015

On Mar 2nd 2015, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) held a press conference to elaborate new labelling requirements for food & functional food. 1 Apr 2015 is set as the effective date of the new labelling standard for food while the implementation date of the new standard for functional foods has not been indicated.

Under the new labelling scheme, the requirements for labelling of nutritional information will change from voluntary to mandatory, which will include energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium.

Different grace periods for complying with the new labeling standards will be granted for processed foods and food additives (five years) and fresh food (one year and six months).
