In a notice issued on July 29, 2024, the Malaysian government reiterated the strict requirements for importing foods obtained through modern biotechnology, or genetically modified (GM) foods.
The key points highlighted in the notice are:
Event Approval Requirement: All imported GM foods must first obtain event approval from the Department of Biosafety, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability. Only approved GM events can be legally imported into Malaysia. (Please refer to this webpage for approved events)
Prohibited Imports: If a GM food item uses an event that is not included in the approved list, its importation will be prohibited.
Labeling Compliance: Imported GM foods must also adhere to the labeling requirements stipulated under the Food Regulations 1985.
Importer Responsibility: The onus is on the importer to ensure the imported GM foods fully comply with Malaysia's food safety regulations, standards, and labeling rules provided in the Food Act 1983 and other relevant laws.
