A New Nutritional Additive Approved to Use in Taiwan

A new nutritional additive has been approved to use by the Department of Health, Executive Yuan of Taiwan. Thus, the corresponding amendments has been made on Appendix 1 of Article 2 and Appendix 2 of Article 3 of the Standards for Specification, Scope, Application and Limitation of Food Additives(hereinafter referred to as the Standards) on 21 September, 2012. In addition to the newest one(ferrous ammonium phosphate, CAS No.10101-60-7), there are other 318 nutritional additives listed in the Appendix of the Standards.

The Appendix 1 is for scope, application and limitation of the food additives, including 17 categories, such as the preservatives, sanitizing agents, antioxidants, bleaching Agents, color fasting agents, leavening agents, etc. The contents of Appendix 2 are detailed specifications of the corresponding additives listed in Appendix 1.

A new entry of ferrous ammonium phosphate is added into the Category Eight(Nutritional additives) of Appendix1 of Article 2:

Ferrous ammonium phosphate

  1. General foods, not more than 22.5 mg of iron for foods labeled with daily dosage or for every 300 g of food without daily dosage labeling.

  2. Special dietary foods: as practically needed.

  1. For supplementing purpose.

  2. Not allowed to use in infant (supplementary) foods.
