New Zealand Dairy: New Requirements for Exported Dairy Products

1. New Zealand MPI requires that products exported to China should be made by manufacturers accredited by the Chinese government. 2. According to China CNCA, as of 15 Dec 2014, infant formula products made by 59 overseas manufacturers from 16 countries and general dairy products made by 1749 manufacturers from 29 countries can be exported to China.

Recently, New Zealand MPI issued new requirements for domestic dairy companies requiring relevant enterprise to notify government of the raw materials and their country of origin of all dairy products intended for export. Under the new rule, enterprises manufacturing all products using cow or goat milk, such as liquid milk, milk powder, condensed milk, cheese and other dairy products should declare the these information to the MPI. In addition, for products that are specifically exported to China, the raw milk should be from countries that have already been recognized by the Chinese government (see CL Food News on 4 Mar 2013). Up to now, a total of 1749 manufacturers in 29 countries have obtained China CNCA approval. This policy will help further ensure the safety and reputation of NZ dairy.
