New Zealand Explores Digital Labelling for Imported Foods with Proposed Trial

New Zealand consulted on a one-year trial allowing certain imported pre-packaged foods to meet mandatory labelling requirements via digital means (e.g., QR codes) instead of full physical labels. The trial is limited to low-risk, compliant products from countries with mature food regulatory systems, and participating retailers must ensure all mandatory information is easily accessible, accurate, and consistent between digital and physical formats.

New Zealand's Minister for Food Safety has initiated a public consultation on a proposal to trial digital labelling for certain imported food products. The proposal, announced by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), seeks to grant a temporary exemption from some physical labelling requirements, allowing mandatory information to be provided to consumers through digital means such as QR codes.
