After China and Australia officially signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) last week, New Zealand’s government is now looking to renegotiate its FTA with China. In comparison to New Zealand’s FTA, Australia’s deal with China is widely regarded as more mutually equitable.
New Zealand was the first country to sign an FTA with China back in 2008. Under New Zealand’s current deal tariffs are imposed on products, including dairy products, once designated imports quotas are exceeded. In comparison under the China-Australia FTA agreement no such quota system will be applied.
NZ government officials are attempting to open new trade talks with the Chinese government to renew the terms of its FTA.
