Editor's Note: This article tracks the updates on New Zealand's revised MRLs in 2024.
New Zealand has its own standards for agricultural and veterinary chemical residues in food. The Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds, issued by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), sets forth these maximum residue levels (MRLs). Furthermore, imported food commodities can comply with either a MRL established in the Notice or a Codex MRL. This article offers an update on the changes to New Zealand's MRLs in 2024. On March 21, 2024, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) of New Zealand issued Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds, replacing the previous version issued in December, 2023. The food notice sets new MRLs for Pydiflumetofen, and deletes Warfarin for any food, which comes into force immediately.
Major changes are outlined in the table below:
Compound | Food | MRL (mg/kg) |
Pydiflumetofen | Barley grain | /→0.2 |
Eggs | /→0.01(*) | |
Poultry fat | /→0.01(*) | |
Poultry meat | /→0.01(*)
Poultry offal | /→0.01(*)
Warfarin | Any food | 0.001(*) |
Notes: Asterisk (*) indicates that the maximum residue level is set at the limit of determination/analytical quantification (the lowest level that can be reliably detected).
