Philippine FDA Allows the Use of Sodium Cyclamate as a Food Additive

On 15 April 2013, Philippine FDA released Advisory No. 2013-009 to allow the use of sodium cyclamate (called as “magic sugar”), an artificial non-caloric sweetening agent, in food. In the Meantime, the previous BFAD Advisory No. 2000-05 that prohibits its handling is revoked.

Under the adversary, all importers, traders and distributors of the “magic sugar” are required to apply for market authorization from FDA to ensure proper label and safe use of the product.

The maximum level of the additive in food is specified in CODEX General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA). All food manufacturers must comply with requirements in CODEX and declare its use to the PH FDA.
