South Korea Proposes Amendments to Import Health Requirements for Pet Food

1. Extending the transitional period for pet food establishment approval and health certificate format to December 31, 2027.

2. Revising ingredient sourcing rules to allow certain legally imported animal-derived materials with required heat treatment, while prohibiting ruminant proteins.

3. Exempting certain sterilized pet foods from import health requirements, except when containing ruminant-derived materials.

On November 4, 2025, South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of proposed amendments to the Import Health Requirements for Pet Food. Comments may be submitted within 30 days from the date of the WTO notification.
