South Korea Proposes Mandatory GMO Labeling for Certain Highly Processed Foods
Mar 03, 2026
Rita Bao
South Korea has proposed draft amendments to mandate GMO labeling for certain highly processed foods, including soy sauces/pastes, sugars, and edible oils/fats, based on the use of GM raw materials, even when GM DNA or protein is no longer detectable.
On February 27, 2026, South Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) issued draft amendments to the Labeling Standards for Genetically Modified Foods. The draft regulation seeks to mandate GMO labeling for certain highly processed foods, including soy sauces, sugars, and edible oils, even if genetically modified DNA or proteins are no longer detectable in the final product due to the manufacturing process. Public comments can be submitted by April 30, 2026.
