South Korea Revises Food Additive Code

The applicable scope of Nicotinic Acid is reduced to four food categories. Twenty-two substances for disinfecting utensils are deleted.

On October 28, 2022, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) published a notification to disclose the amendments of Food Additive Code1, which will be implemented on July 1, 2023. The details are specified below: 

1. Application Scope of Nicotinic Acid

Nicotinic Acid (니코틴산) is mainly used as a nutrition enhancer. However, the intake of Nicotinic Acid in excessive dosage can lead to side effects. Therefore, the competent authority reduced its application scope to four food items. After the implementation of the provisions, Nicotinic Acid can only be added to:

  • special nutritional foods

  • foods for special medical purposes

  • health functional food

  • nutrition-enriched wheat flour

Notes

According to the MFDS2, for products excluded from the applicable scope for using Nicotinic Acid, enterprises can use Nicotinamide as an alternative. Nicotinamide has the same effect as Nicotinic Acid, whereas it causes no side effects.

2. Deleting utensil disinfectants

The below twenty-two disinfectants for utensils, which have no history of use, are deleted:
