On January 8, 2023, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) issued an administrative notice to solicit public opinion on the Standards, Specifications and Labelling Standards for Bottled Water1. Suggestions are welcome before January 31.
To reduce label waste and contribute to container recycling, a label-free QR code marking method will be introduced for bottled water. Once the draft is passed, from January 1, 2026, it will be mandatory to display a label-free QR code on bottled water manufactured in South Korea.
(Example of QR code for bottled water cap)
However, according to the draft, products manufactured before January 1, 2026, are still allowed to use other labelling methods such as body labels, bottle cap labels, etc., in parallel with the label-free QR code labelling method.
In addition, the definition of the main display surface and information display surface are newly introduced. Methods for labeling the detailed items such as font size, address, etc., are also stipulated in the regulation’s annex.
