Taiwan Food Imports: 2015 Annual Border Inspection Overview

In Taiwan, offices in Jilong Port, Taoyuan Airport, Taizhong Port and Gaoxiong Port have been established to deal with border inspection of all imported foods. In addition, as of 7 Apr 2015, imported foods in containers are required to undergo random inspection and must be stored in designated inspection area.

In 2015, 945 out of 640,052 batches of food and related products which received border inspection failed inspection, accounting for 1.88% of the inspected batches. All products found not complying with the  Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation  were issued with rectifications, returned or destroyed. The highest volumes of failures by category include:

  • Fresh, chilled, frozen vegetables

  • Plastic vessels

  • Fresh, chilled, frozen fruit

  • Tea products

A large number of noncompliance issues were due to

  • Pesticide residues

  • Temperature management and storage
