US APHIS Unveils eFile System for Simplified Animal and Plant Health Permit Management

Enterprises can obtain the permitting and licensing faster and simpler through the eFile system now.

On December 20, 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced completion of its eFile system, which serves as a convenient one-stop shop for all registrations, permits, and licenses issued by APHIS. It enables stakeholders to easily apply for and manage permits and licenses online, while also offering real-time tracking of application status.

The programs of Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), Veterinary Services (VS), and Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) under APHIS now offer enterprise and stakeholder services through the eFile system, ensuring efficient and effective interactions.

Plant Protection and Quarantine:

Before bringing plants and/or plant products into the United States, it is necessary to obtain Transit Permits from the APHIS. These permits are required for the safe and legal movement of such items through the country, ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting against potential risks. For application of permit to transit plants and/or plant products, please click here.

APHIS announced that the PPQ's eFile simplified permitting issuance will reduce processing time from weeks to minutes.

Veterinary Services:

The Veterinary Services Permitting Assistant is a tool within the eFile system that specifically targets to the import of animal products. Its purpose is to offer guidance on the VS requirements for international imports. By providing clear instructions, it simplifies the process, reducing the need for unnecessary applications and expediting permit processing.

Biotechnology Regulatory Services:

The Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) Permitting Assistant is a tool, which specifically applies to plant genetically engineered organisms. Its purpose is to assist users in determining the necessary permit requirements before submitting an application.

Notably, APHIS eFile has replaced the outdated ePermits legacy permitting system, which is now only used for permit modifications. ChemLinked recommends enterprises to familiarize themselves with the APHIS eFile system, follow the provided guidelines, ensure the accuracy of information, and avoid any delays for importation.
