173 Batches of Imported Food Rejected in May 2020

Imported fresh food may subject to more strict custom quarantine in June to mitigate against risk of coronavirus contamination.

On Jun 16th, China GAC released the list of non-compliant food products in May, 2020. [1] A total of 173 batches of food from 24 different countries and regions were rejected.

Reasons for Rejection

Two major reasons for rejection in May remain to be:

  • Unqualified Labeling (31.2%)

  • Animal epidemic disease detected (11.5%)

However, since the investigation began into imported Salmon as a possible causative factor in the recent Beijing Covid Cluster,[2] Beijing has started strict food safety inspection especially on fresh food and imported aquaculture products.[3]  Imported aquaculture and meat products will likely be subject to intensified custom quarantine in June.

Origin

47 batches (27.1% of total rejections) of rejected imported food products originated from Vietnam, half of them were fresh chili and the other half peanuts.
