China CFDA Requires Infant Formula to be Traceable

On 7 Jan 2016, CFDA issued the Rules for Food Safety Traceability Information Record of Infant Formula Manufacturers. It requires infant formula manufacturers in China to establish a traceability system to track the movement of products through the supply Chain.

Affected producers are encouraged to adopt electronic methods to record information on product R&D, raw materials, production process, finished products management, sales, recall, etc.

China Guangdong Province has taken the lead in implementing food traceability systems (see CL Food news on 31 Dec 2015). China’s new Food Safety Law has introduced the requirement to establish a national food traceability system for the first time. It’s a long way to go until all categories of food are covered but high risk products will have traceability systems implemented first which includes baby foods, edible oil and alcoholic products, etc.
