China Food Labeling: Organic Foods Must Comply with Domestic Regulations

During the China Food & Food Contact Materials Regulatory Summit held on 13 Oct 2014, Zhong Quanbin, expert at Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, delivered a speech on food labeling regulations during which he specially addressed useful notes regarding labeling of registered organic foods in China.

No Certification means no marketing

Any uncertified organic product are not allowed to bear words on their packaging or label, such as “organic”, “pollution-free”, and “natural”, etc.

Certified Organic Logo

In light of Administrative Measures of Organic Products Certification that became effective on 1 Apr 2014, the Chinese certified organic logo shall only been used for products authorized under the certificate of organic products.

Certified manufacturers should make sure that the logo be attached either on the certified products or on the minimum sales packages of their products. The logo is allowed to be scaled and printed on the label, instruction or other promotional materials of the certified product as appropriate.

It is noteworthy that when an organic logo is present on the product or its minimum sales package, the logo or name of the corresponding certification institution shall be indicated at an obvious place next to the logo.  The size of the certification institutes logo or the words used shall not exceed that of the certified organic logo.

Requirements for Organic Ingredients

Organic ingredients also have to pass organic product certification. The labelling standards that apply are affected by the content of organic ingredients in the product.

Content of Organic Ingredients Standard Labeling
95% and more The word “organic” can be present on the product or on its package and label.
70% to 95% The word “made with organic ingredient” can be present on the product or on its package and label
Less than 70% The word “organic” shall only be attached to the specific ingredient in the ingredient list.
