China Food Safety: Huge Volume of Prepackaged Water Rejected at Port

Recently, a batch of prepackaged drinking water was returned due to the use of an illegal nutritional fortification substance found in the products. The batch of US products stopped by Tianjin CIQ officials, totaling 270 thousand bottles, ranks as this year’s biggest inspection failure by quantity.

Calcium citrate as listed on the water’s ingredient list is used as a nutritional fortification substance in the prepackaged drinking water. However, it is stipulated in “GB 14880-2012 Standard for the Use of Nutritional Fortification Substances in Foods” that the presence of calcium as an artificial additive is not allowed. Improper use of nutritional fortification substances violate the Food Safety Law, GB2760-2014 and GB 14880-2012 will be subject to punitive measures.
