China Imports: Increasing Failure Ratio of Imported Food Contact Products

According to the white paper of “2015 China Imported Food Contact Product Quality Status” released by AQSIQ on May 17, 2016, 8,331 batches of imported food contact products failed CIQ quarantine and inspection in 2015 with a failure percentage high of 7.71%, the highest seen in five years.

According to the white paper of “2015 China Imported Food Contact Product Quality Status” released by AQSIQ on May 17, 2016, 8,331 batches of imported food contact products failed CIQ quarantine and inspection in 2015 with a failure percentage high of 7.71%, the highest seen in five years.

The major categories of imported food contact products include ceramic products, plastic products, metal products, paper products, and household appliance, the failure ratio of which are ranked in Figure 1:

The reasons for failure in CIQ quarantine and inspection were mainly incompliant labeling, unqualified safety and hygienic indexes, quality defects, etc. In the failed 8,331 batches of imported food contact products in 2015, 7,751 batches of them failed due to incompliant labeling.

The countries of origin of the failed products were mainly Japan, Korea, China (reimported after export), France, China Taiwan, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Turkey and USA. Their failed products accounted for 71.3% of the total failed batches of imported food contact products in 2015, which are ranked in Figure 2:

The failed products mainly required correction, were returned to the original export country, or destroyed at ports according to the different reasons for failure.
