On Sep. 22, 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) announced that the ban on the importation of US beef (both deboned and bone-in beef), derived from animals aged under 30 months had been lifted with immediate effect. However, these products should be compliant with the requirements of China’s traceability system as well as inspection and quarantine requirements, which will be formulated later.
US beef had been banned in China since 2001 to minimize the risk of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) and the associated zoonotic human prion disease called variant CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) associated with the consumption of infected beef. The lifting of the 15 year ban is of great significance to the meat industries of both countries.
